Most people know they would feel better if they got a massage more often. The part that trips them up is knowing which treatment to ask for. Remedial, therapeutic, sports, lymphatic drainage, pregnancy, myofascial release and reiki healing: they sound different, and they are. Here is a plain-language guide to what each one does and who it is actually for.
There is a persistent idea that massage is a luxury, something you book for a birthday or a special occasion. The evidence tells a different story. Research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that regular massage produces measurable reductions in cortisol alongside increases in serotonin and dopamine. These are not small, incidental changes. They are the kind of shifts that affect how you sleep, how you feel, and how well your body actually recovers.
The physical and mental load of ordinary life accumulates in the body. This is just as true for men as it is for anyone else, though men are significantly less likely to seek out bodywork until something is already wrong. Whether you are managing training load, carrying desk tension, doing physical labour, or running on empty from the demands of work and family, massage is one of the most direct tools available to reset the system before it breaks down.
Remedial massage is purposeful and targeted. Your therapist will ask where you are holding tension, assess what is going on, and work directly on the areas that need attention using techniques like deep tissue work and trigger point therapy to address the root cause rather than just the surface.
It is not always gentle. That said, good remedial work is not about pain, it is about precision. The goal is to create a meaningful, lasting change in how your body feels.
Ali offers Remedial Massage on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Sports massage is built around the demands of physical training and athletic performance. It combines targeted techniques to address the specific load patterns that come with sport, whether that is running, cycling, team sport, or gym-based training.
It works best as part of a regular training routine rather than a one-off. Used consistently, it helps the body absorb training load more effectively, reduces the risk of injury, and supports faster recovery between sessions.
Ali offers Sports Massage on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Therapeutic massage is about the whole body and the whole nervous system. The techniques are smoother and more flowing, designed to create the conditions for genuine relaxation rather than to target a specific complaint.
If remedial massage is a conversation with one part of your body, therapeutic massage is giving your entire system permission to exhale.
Many people find this is the massage they did not know they needed. They come in thinking they are fine and leave realising how much they were carrying. For men in particular, this tends to be the session that shifts things. The body has often been in a state of low-grade tension for so long that it has become the baseline. Therapeutic massage resets that baseline.
Ali offers Therapeutic Massage on Mondays and Tuesdays. Kathy offers Therapeutic Massage on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Myofascial release works with the connective tissue that surrounds and supports every muscle and organ in the body. Where standard massage addresses the muscle itself, myofascial release addresses the fascia, the web of tissue that connects everything. Restrictions in the fascia can create tension, limited movement, and discomfort that standard massage techniques do not fully resolve.
Reiki is an energetic healing practice. Ali is an energetic healer who works with the body's energy system to support balance, reduce stress, and encourage the body's own healing response. The experience is profoundly calming, and many clients find it addresses a layer of tension that purely physical work cannot reach.
Combined, myofascial release and reiki healing offer a treatment that works on both the structural and the energetic level. It is particularly well-suited to clients who feel chronically depleted, stuck, or disconnected from their body.
Ali offers Myofascial Release and Reiki Healing on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Integrated lymphatic drainage is unlike any other massage on this list. The pressure is intentionally very light. This is not about working into tissue, it is about encouraging the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body using precise, rhythmic strokes.
The lymphatic system is your body's drainage network. It clears waste, supports immune function, and manages fluid balance. Unlike the circulatory system, it has no pump and relies on movement and manual stimulation to do its job properly.
The experience is extraordinarily calming. Many clients describe it as the most deeply relaxing treatment they have ever had, and they leave feeling a lightness and clarity that is quite distinct from any other massage.
Kathy offers Integrated Lymphatic Drainage on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Pregnancy changes everything about how the body feels. The lower back, hips, and pelvis take on new load. The centre of gravity shifts. Sleep becomes more difficult. And most standard massage positions are no longer comfortable or appropriate.
Pregnancy massage uses specialist positioning, supported side-lying rather than face-down, and techniques adapted specifically for the prenatal body. It is safe, deeply comfortable, and for many pregnant clients one of the most genuinely relieving treatments available during a period when the body is working exceptionally hard.
Kathy offers Pregnancy Massage on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
First trimester bookings are welcome with midwife or GP clearance.

Massage works even better as part of a wider session. Some combinations that clients love:
Infrared Sauna before Massage. The heat loosens tissue and increases circulation, so your therapist can work more effectively from the moment they start.
Float Therapy after Massage. Floating after bodywork extends the relaxation response significantly. Many clients describe their deepest floats as the ones that follow a massage.
Compression Therapy alongside Remedial or Sports Massage. Normatec compression works through the lower body while your massage addresses the upper, covering more ground in a single session.
How often should I get a massage? For general maintenance and stress management, monthly is a solid starting point. If you are training hard, doing physical work, or going through a high-stress period, fortnightly sessions make a noticeable difference. Your therapist can advise based on your situation.
Will a Remedial or Sports Massage hurt? Good targeted work is not about pain. There can be moments of intensity when working on genuinely tight areas, but your therapist will always work within your comfort level. Communication during the session is encouraged and the pressure can always be adjusted.
How long is a session? All massage sessions at Wellness & Recovery Haus are 60 minutes.
What should I wear? You will be professionally draped throughout your session, with only the area being worked on uncovered. Wear whatever is comfortable to travel in.
Can I get a massage if I am pregnant in my first trimester? Yes, with clearance from your midwife or GP. From the second trimester onward, no clearance is required. Simply let us know when you book so we can prepare the right positioning.
What is Reiki and how does it work? Reiki is an energetic healing practice based on the principle that the body holds energy that can become blocked or imbalanced through stress, illness, or lived experience. Ali is an energetic healer who works with this energy by placing hands on or just above the body, facilitating the release of blockages and encouraging the body's natural capacity to restore balance. Clients often describe a deep sense of calm, warmth, or emotional release during a session. It works alongside physical bodywork to address what the hands alone cannot reach.
Is massage good for men? Completely, and it is significantly underused by men relative to the benefit it provides. Remedial and sports massage directly address the kind of physical load that accumulates from training, manual work, or long hours at a desk. Therapeutic massage and reiki healing address the stress and nervous system load that builds over time and rarely gets proper attention. Regular massage is one of the most practical things a man can do for physical performance, sleep quality, and overall resilience.
Is massage right for me if I have never had one before? Completely. The team at Wellness & Recovery Haus works with clients at every experience level. If you are unsure what you need, just ask. A conversation about how you are feeling is the best place to start.
