Red Light Therapy for Beginners

Twenty minutes. No heat. No downtime.

Just you, a private space and a gentle wash of red and near-infrared light.

At Wellness & Recovery Haus in Kiama, the Refined Wellness® Red Light Pod offers a whole-body photobiomodulation session designed to fit easily into your day.

If you've never tried red light therapy before, here's what to know.

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light.

At Wellness & Recovery Haus, the Red Light Pod is used as part of a broader wellbeing routine, with a focus on recovery, skin health, mobility and everyday wellbeing.

The experience is:

  • Whole-body
  • Non-invasive
  • 20 minutes
  • Heat-free
  • No downtime

It isn't a treatment for a medical condition, and it's best approached as one part of a wider recovery and wellbeing routine.

What happens during your first session?

It's remarkably straightforward.

1. Get settled

A team member will explain the session and what to wear.

2. Step into your private suite

You'll settle into the Red Light Pod and get comfortable.

3. Let the light do its thing

The session runs for 20 minutes. You'll see a gentle red glow, but there is no heat.

4. Get on with your day

There's no recovery period afterwards, so you can simply leave and continue with your day.

Some guests use the 20 minutes as a chance to switch off. Others simply enjoy the quiet.

What is red light therapy designed to support?

The Red Light Pod is used to support:

  • Muscle recovery
  • Healthy inflammatory responses
  • Joint comfort and mobility
  • Circulation and tissue oxygenation
  • Skin health and collagen production
  • Healthy ageing

These are wellbeing aims rather than promises of medical treatment.

What does the research say?

Red light therapy has attracted increasing research interest, although the evidence is still developing.

A 2024 review in Frontiers in Photonics looked at the way different wavelengths interact with cells and discussed associations with processes including collagen and elastin production and inflammatory signalling. Much of the evidence, however, comes from cell and animal studies rather than large human trials.

Research into exercise recovery is similarly promising but varied. A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Lasers in Medical Science found considerable variation in the light settings and protocols used across studies, making it difficult to draw a single conclusion about the ideal approach.

So while red light therapy is an interesting addition to a recovery routine, it isn't something we position as a clinically proven treatment.

Red Light Pod vs Dermalux vs Infrared Sauna

They can sound similar, but the experiences are quite different.

Red Light Pod

Uses red and near-infrared light across the whole body, without heat. 20 minutes.

Dermalux

Uses LED light at close range and is primarily focused on the skin. 20 to 30 minutes.

Infrared Sauna

Uses infrared heat across the whole body. Session length varies.

If you're looking for a whole-body, heat-free light experience, the Red Light Pod is the natural fit. If your focus is primarily skin, Dermalux offers a more targeted experience. For warmth and a sauna-style session, infrared is a different experience altogether.

How often should I have red light therapy?

Consistency is generally more useful than treating one session as a standalone event.

Research into photobiomodulation suggests that effects can be cumulative, although the ideal frequency varies depending on the treatment and protocol.

Some guests begin with one or two sessions a week for several weeks before finding a rhythm that works for them.

If you're unsure, the team can help you work out where a session might fit into your routine.

What pairs well with red light therapy?

Red light therapy can be part of a broader recovery session at Wellness & Recovery Haus.

Popular combinations include:

  • Infrared Sauna
  • Magnesium Float Therapy
  • Normatec Compression
  • BOA MAX 2 Compression

You can also pair your Red Light Pod session with a float if you'd like to build a little more quiet into your visit.

Is red light therapy right for everyone?

Red light therapy is offered as a general wellbeing experience.

If you have a persistent skin concern, a health condition or take medication that affects light sensitivity, speak with your GP before booking.

It isn't a substitute for medical or dermatological care.

What to Know Before You Book

How long is a session?

20 minutes.

Does it feel hot?

No. Unlike an infrared sauna, the Red Light Pod uses light without heat.

Does it hurt?

No. The experience is gentle and non-invasive.

Do I need to prepare?

No special preparation is required. The team will explain what to wear when you arrive.

Is it the same as an infrared sauna?

No. An infrared sauna uses heat. Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light without heat.

How is it different from Dermalux?

Dermalux is a targeted, close-range treatment primarily focused on the skin. The Red Light Pod provides whole-body exposure in one session.

Will I notice something after one session?

You may simply find the session relaxing. Research into photobiomodulation suggests that consistency may matter more than any individual session.

Is there research behind red light therapy?

Yes, although the evidence is still developing. Research includes laboratory, animal and human studies, with considerable variation between treatment protocols. We prefer to keep the claims measured and evidence-led.
