First Massage Guide: Beginner's Massage in Kiama

A good massage doesn't have to mean enduring an hour of uncomfortable pressure.

At Wellness & Recovery Haus, your massage begins with you. Your therapist will talk through the session, understand what you're looking for and adjust the pressure as you go.

Whether you're carrying tension from a busy week, looking for a gentler experience during pregnancy or simply want some uninterrupted time to yourself, there are three massage options to choose from.

Which massage is right for you?

Therapeutic Massage

A considered, adaptable massage that can move between firm and gentle pressure. A good starting point if you're booking your first massage or aren't quite sure what you need.

Pregnancy Massage

A massage adapted around the changing body during pregnancy, with positioning and pressure chosen with comfort in mind.

Integrated Lymphatic Drainage

What happens during your first massage?

There's nothing complicated about it.

  • A quick conversation. Your therapist will explain how the session works, including positioning and how you'll be covered.
  • Settle into your private suite. You'll get comfortable on the massage table and prepare for your session.
  • Start at a comfortable pressure. Your massage begins at the level you've agreed on.
  • Speak up when you need to. Pressure can be changed at any point. Softer, firmer, more focus in one area, less in another. Your feedback is welcome.
  • Take your time afterwards. Once the massage finishes, you'll have a moment to rest before moving into the refresh space.
  • There is no right way to experience a massage. Some people chat throughout. Others barely say a word. Falling asleep is perfectly normal too.

    How should I prepare?

    Keep it simple.

    • Arrive a few minutes early so you aren't rushing in.
    • Wear something comfortable and easy to change out of.
    • Avoid a heavy meal immediately before your appointment.
    • Drink water throughout the day.
    • Think about any areas you'd like your therapist to focus on.
    • Let your therapist know about any areas you'd prefer to avoid.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want. That's part of what your consultation is for.

    What does the research say?

Research has found associations between massage and reduced feelings of anxiety, although studies vary considerably in their methods and settings.

A 2024 systematic review in the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine reported that 15 of 18 massage studies within the manual therapy research reviewed found significant reductions in self-reported anxiety. The studies varied in technique, session length and participant groups, and many were conducted in clinical settings rather than wellness environments.

At Wellness & Recovery Haus, massage is offered as a general wellbeing experience and isn't intended to replace medical care. If you're managing an injury, persistent pain or a health condition, speak with your GP before booking.

What should I do after my massage?

There's no need to rush out.

Take your time getting up, particularly if you're feeling deeply relaxed. Drink some water and give yourself a little space before returning to the rest of your day.

Your visit finishes in the refresh space, giving you a few quiet moments before you're back out into the world.

    Your massage questions, answered

Which massage should I book first?

Therapeutic Massage is a good starting point for most first-timers because your therapist can adjust the pressure throughout the session.

    Do I have to undress?

You wear what you're comfortable in. Your therapist will explain positioning and covering before the session.

What if the pressure isn't right?

Say so. Adjusting pressure is completely normal and helps your therapist tailor the experience to you.

    Do I have to talk?

Not at all. Silence is welcome, and plenty of guests fall asleep.

Can I have a massage during pregnancy?

Pregnancy Massage is available. If you have any concerns, check with your midwife or GP before booking.

    What is Integrated Lymphatic Drainage?

A gentle, rhythmic style of massage designed to support the natural movement of fluid through the body. It feels slower and lighter than a traditional massage.

How often should I have a massage?

There isn't one schedule that suits everyone. Some guests make massage a monthly ritual, while others book when they feel they need a little more time to reset.
